On 27th September, EBA members had the unique opportunity to meet the new Romanian Ambassador to Moldova, Mr. Daniel Ionita. The ambassador discussed the current economic and political situation in Moldova, in the context of the financial support offered recently by Romanian Government, of the development projects of infrastructure in various domains, as well as the support oriented to export development from Republic of Moldova to EU market.
Mr. Ionita underlined that the economies of the two countries need to be complementary, and not competitive, with a more friendly business environment, which ensures legislative and financial safety nets. This is the main premise for bringing more investors to Moldova. Another problem that needs to be adressesed is the mistrust between the government and society. The government needs to regain its credibility and this may be done by reforming the public administration, fighting corruption, and improving business legislation.
Romania is the biggest export partner for Moldova, therefore our members asked questions and suggested solutions for improving the trade between the 2 countries. EBA members were interested in how Romania is assisting Moldova in cases of export restrictions and what are the success factors that Moldova can copy and apply at home. It was also discussed which Romanian organisations can assist with accesing EU funds, the need to increase regional air transportation, and the unions for Romanian companies in Moldova. Nevertheless, the most discussed subject has been border control and the long queues which negatively affect businesses on both banks of the Prut river. As exports to Romania and the EU are increasing, the need to fluidize the transportation of goods and people at this border is of utmost importance.
EBA thanks the Ambassador for his time and readiness to put the needs of our members on his agenda.
