On 9th of December, members of EBA, FIA and AmCham had the opportunity to take part in a joint business breakfast with HE Mr. Pirkka Tapiola, Head of the EU Delegation to Republic of Moldova and HE Mr. James Pettit, U.S. Ambassador to Republic of Moldova. The dialogue was focused on the political situation and the business struggles that companies are facing.
EBA President, Mr. Thomas Moser, accentuated that political stability is imperative for the business environment and that the undergoing reforms need to bring a positive impact. Pirkka Tapiola, who is also the Honorary President of EBA, reiterated that Moldova needs to keep up to the mark, as there is also a pressure for change on the part of society. At the same time, he reiterated that the political situation does not fundamentally change the relationship between the European Union and Moldova, as an imposing 68,3 % of Moldova’s exports are oriented towards the EU, which is also the largest source of foreign direct investments in the country. When talking about the reforms, Mr. Tapiola mentioned that it is time to move from quantitative to qualitative reforms, and mentioned the technical expertise which EBA provides for the Labour Code amendments and its involvement in the Dual Education initiative. Mr. James Pettit elaborated on the problem of corruption, which impacts the quality of the citizens and the desire of foreign companies to invest in Moldova, which could otherwise raise the quality of life in the country and stop the brain drain. He said that, ideally, reforms should come from the country, but external assistance is also welcome, if it’s needed. It was also specified in the discourses that more focus needs to be given to civic and media freedom in Moldova.
An important messages of their Excellencies was that business association need to work together, and use this leverage to become a stronger voice for their members. Mr. Moser added that members also have to ensure the success of the associations, by being active participants in the committees. This event ended with an open dialogue between associations’ members and the officials.
