On august 15th, 2017 EBA participated at a technical meeting organized on the platform of the Economic Council to the prime minister to discuss about a recent proposal initiated by the Ministry of Finance on reducing the current 2,5 % tax applied to mobile operators to 1,5%, and extending the corresponding tax base to all the providers of electronic communication services.
EBA had constantly advocated for the elimination of the so called 2,5% „luxury tax” applied to mobile operators, underlying that this fiscal measure has to be revised considering that mobile telephony services are no longer considered a luxury service. However, EBA insisted that the measure of extending the fiscal base needs additional review and discussions, as it will impact all the electronic communication services operators (including internet and fixed telephony providers), pointing out at the same time that the funds collected under the proposed tax have to be directed to the development of the ICT sector in Moldova.
