On December 6, EBA participated at the policy dialogue related to tobacco products taxation, which took place at the Parliament of Republic of Moldova.
The scope of the dialogue was to present the international experience in the area of tobacco products taxation and combating contraband. The impact of raising excises on the state budget was also discussed. The representatives of the parliament underlined that public health remains a priority, at the same time the state needs to be more predictable on its fiscal policy, internal procedures provided and coordinated by the Ministry of Health and its subordinate institutions etc., hence ensuring the transparency of economic agents, for sustainable business practices. Olesea Ghedrovici, EBA finance and tax expert, clarified that economic agents are not against the decision to raise excise duties, as long as there is a coherent policy in place , aligned to the regulations of the European Union.
The policy dialogue was organized at the initiative of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Moldova, World Bank and the World Health Organisation Office in Republic of Moldova.
